4

Buddha the enlighted one formulated these beliefs, the four noble truths: 1. Human life -from birth, through old age, sickness, and death- is full of pain and sorrow. 2. Pain is caused by longing for life, passion, and pleasures. 3. Pain can be stopped. 4. The way to stop longing and thus to end pain, is to travel the eightfold path. One must practice: a) right belief, b)right intention, c) right speech, d) right action, e) right livelihood, f) right effort, g)rightthinking, and h) right meditation. The Buddha believed that by following these rules the soul would finally be freed of the bondage of rebirth. - History and Life. The world and its people. Scott Foresman.
